Have nothing to do with the [evil] things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light... [For] when all things are brought out into the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed...

Virgin Islands Governor: Seize Firearms Ahead of Hurricane Irma

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Wednesday, September 6, 2017:

Looking down at Magens Bay from Mountain Top, Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

In anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Irma, U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp on Tuesday ordered the Islands’ National Guard to “seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission.”

More chillingly, Governor Mapp has ordered his adjutant general, Deborah Howell, “to take whatever actions she considers necessary to carry out the assigned mission,” presumably actions that could end the lives of anyone resisting the Guard’s demands.

This is “necessary to maintain or restore order, and to guarantee the safety of life and property” adds the order, with nothing said about the safety of the lives of those who think the Vitter Amendment protects them from such seizures.

The Vitter Amendment, otherwise known as the Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006, was passed following the order of the mayor of New Orleans to confiscate firearms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

David Codrea, writing for Oathkeepers, called this order by the Islands’ governor a

With Nod to Sovereignty, Trump Dumps UN “Climate” Regime

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Thursday, June 1, 2017. It was written by Alex Newman, a colleague of mine, and is reprinted here with his permission.

After months of keeping the world in suspense about his intentions, President Donald Trump formally announced that the United States would be withdrawing from the United Nations “Paris Agreement” on alleged man-made global warming. Blasting the non-binding UN scheme as a counterproductive effort to disadvantage America and redistribute U.S. wealth rather than fix the “climate,” Trump portrayed the decision as one that puts “America First.” He also chastised foreign powers and their lobbyists for demanding that the United States continue to handicap its economy under the guise of doing virtually nothing for the climate. The withdrawal, Trump said, represents the “re-assertion of America’s sovereignty” and a fulfillment of his efforts to re-invigorate the American economy. It was also the fulfillment of Trump’s oft-repeated pledge to “cancel” the UN scheme.

However, frustrating some of his supporters and climate realists, Trump also indicated that he was open to either re-negotiating the Paris Agreement or creating a similar international “climate” regime that would be more “fair” to the United States. In fact, the president even offered to work with Democrat Party leaders to create a new global-warming scheme — provided

Trump Pressured to Stay in Paris Climate Agreement

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Monday, May 29, 2017:

Candidate Donald Trump repeatedly promised that he would, if elected president, withdraw from the Paris Agreement agreed to under the previous administration in 2015. He said, “We are going to cancel the Paris climate agreement [and] stop all payments of the United States tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs.”

Under that agreement (not a treaty which then-President Obama claimed wouldn’t need Senate ratification), so-called global warming would be limited by slashing carbon dioxide and other emissions from the burning of fossil fuels and concentrating instead on green energy development.

One sign that Trump intends to keep his promise followed the official dispatch from the G7 Summit in Sicily on Friday:

Sweden Revokes Arrest Warrant for WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Friday, May 19, 2017:

Little is likely to change for Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, who just learned on Friday that his arrest warrant issued by Swedish authorities back in 2010 has been revoked. Until the British government decides to revoke its own warrant for Assange jumping bail in November of that year, he’ll stay put inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

Sweden’s top prosecutor, Marianne Ny, said she gave up trying to serve him but added that “if he were to return to Sweden before the statute of limitations on this case expires in August 2020, the preliminary investigation could be resumed.”

At issue was a rape charge levied against Assange by two women with whom he had sexual relations while in Sweden to make a speech in 2010. When Interpol issued a Red Notice for his arrest, Assange gave himself up. In December that year he posted bail in London but

The Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) grew out of failure. Known alternatively as Chatham House, it was conceived during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 (also called the Versailles Peace Conference). It was decided that, once the so-called “peace” terms were put in place to punish Germany and its allies after the War to end all wars, various insiders decided a one-world government was needed to keep such a catastrophe from occurring in the future. On Iran Deal’s First Anniversary, Obama Warns Trump Not to Undo It

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Monday, January 16, 2017:

In a thinly veiled warning to incoming president Donald Trump, President Barack Obama celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Iranian nuclear deal on Monday by warning Trump that undoing the agreement — formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA — would result in much worse consequences:

Trump’s First Challenge: the Iranian Nuclear Deal

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Friday, November 11, 2016:

On Wednesday Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif warned Donald Trump to keep his hands off the nuclear deal he and Secretary of State John Kerry made last year:

Every U.S. president has to understand the realities of today’s world. The most important thing is that the future U.S president sticks to agreements.

Whether Trump agrees with Zarif, or not, will likely be among the very first decisions he’ll be forced to make in January. During his campaign Trump repeatedly called the Iran nuclear deal “the worst deal ever negotiated,” a “disaster,” and said that it could lead to a “nuclear holocaust.” In March he told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, “My number one priority is to dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran.”

Iran is making Trump’s decision easy.

What he would really like, however, is a computerized database of all gun purchases made by every buyer and seller in the country:

Greek Vote the Death Knell for the EU?

This article was published by The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor on Wednesday, July 8, 2015:

English: Nigel Farage at Lord's cricket ground...

Nigel Farage

Nigel Farage, named “Briton of the Year” in 2014 by the London Times, has finally found his voice. He noisily departed the Conservative Party in 1992 after the signing of the treaty that created the European Union to start his own UK Independence Party (UKIP). His criticism of the EU has been steady ever since, culminating in his eulogy on Monday: “The European Union is Dying Before our Eyes.”

According to Farage, Sunday’s referendum in Greece sealed its death warrant, even if somehow the Greek PM Alexis Tsipras is able to come to terms with the troika and have them turn on the financial spigot once again: “It [was] a crushing defeat for those Eurocrats who believe that you can simply bulldoze public opinion.” He added,

Last Friday, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs announced that its totalitarian Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) will become effective on Christmas Eve. The good news is that the treaty has no chance of being ratified by either the lame duck Senate this year or the 114th Senate next year.

Its terms are positively evil:

51 OECD Countries Sign Tax Evasion Treaty

This article first appeared at TheNewAmerican.com on Monday, November 3, 2014:

Last Wednesday’s agreement among 51 countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Berlin to share tax information across borders in a continuing effort to crack down on tax evasion was announced with great excitement but precious little logic.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told the group at a meeting entitled the “Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes” that the agreement is “a joint contribution to more transparency and fairness in our globalized 21st century.” Britain’s Finance Minister George Osborne added, “Tax evasion is not just illegal, it is immoral. You are robbing from your fellow citizens and you should be treated like a common thief.” Said Osborne, the new treaty “strikes a blow on behalf of hard-working taxpayers.”

A careful look reveals that the new treaty in fact is designed to benefit tax collectors, not taxpayers.

Progressivism’s Proof: American Indian Poverty

Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the government take care of him, better take a close look at the American Indian.    – Henry Ford

Using their portable forge, members of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery fabricated various iron implements and traded them to the Mandan and Hidatsa Indian tribes in what is now North Dakota, in exchange for corn, beans, squash and tobacco to sustain them during the winter of 1804-5. Several months and a thousand miles later the Corps was surprised to see that one of their implements, an axe,

El Paso County Stands Strong Against the Feds!

This is a local issue, but it represents a much larger, much more important issue: pushback against – or more properly, nullification of – unconstitutional federal intrusions into state and local matters where they don’t belong.

This morning, Tuesday, January 22nd, at approximately 9:30AM, the El Paso County Board of County Commissioners will be considering, and likely voting favorably for, a “Resolution in Defense of 2nd Amendment Rights.”

As is typical in such a resolution, there are lots of “whereases” but the first “whereas” is the most important:

Whereas, the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution provides that “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”…

And then it gets to the good stuff:

Surprising good news: the Senate votes down a noxious UN treaty

Alex Newman is a writer at The New American and my respect for his ability and his clarity (in addition to his world view) continues to grow. So I’m pleased to riff on his article yesterday about the Senate telling the UN to take a hike.

Responding to a tsunami of organized opposition against a highly controversial United Nations disability treaty known as the “UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” (CRPD), on December 4, 38 GOP senators voted against a coalition of 61 Democrats and so-called “RINO” Republicans to kill the agreement by denying a two-thirds majority needed for ratification.

Those activists had been watching with growing alarm as this treaty appeared to be moving inexorably forward to ratification by the Senate. It was especially disheartening to see Republicans In Name Only line up in support of it, including Bob Dole, the quintessential RINO, showing up in his wheelchair to push for passage.

The treaty is a disaster:

The broad alliance of critics that came together to ultimately defeat the UN CRPD scheme had slammed it as everything from a serious threat to national sovereignty and parental rights to an underhanded power grab by global bureaucrats and pro-abortion forces.

Interestingly, one of those most vociferous in its opposition was the Home School Legal Defense Association:

“Thanks to all of you, Americans experience a great victory for freedom today,” noted the Home School Legal Defense Association, which helped lead opposition to the treaty among homeschoolers concerned about multiple provisions in the treaty dealing with parental rights. “Freedom for people to act morally and according to their beliefs is of paramount importance to us. But we would not be able to accomplish anything without engaged citizens who are willing to fight for their freedoms.”

Summit Ministries, located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, just celebrated its 50th anniversary and noted that in that 50 years the school has educated, trained and enabled some 30,000 students to become informed activists in the freedom fight. Many of them (including my son Russ) have decided to home school their kids, and their numbers are growing. At present there are about 2 1/2 million young people being home schooled here in the United States, and enough of them are getting active in issues like these to make a difference.

Wrote Newman:

Homeschoolers, for example, warned that the agreement purports to grant national governments broad and dangerously vague powers to intrude on family life, supposedly to ensure that parents of disabled children are being cared for according to the UN’s dictates. Especially troubling to critics were references to the “best interests” of the child, which analysts have long warned would eventually put politicians, not parents, in charge of making decisions concerning children.

That is the core issue: who teaches the kids? It had little to do with “disabilities” which was just a cover:

Proponents of self-determination and national sovereignty warned that the treaty would have granted the controversial global organization even more power, forcing the U.S. government to defer to an unaccountable international “committee” on disability issues.

The article is worth reading in its entirety.

Obama’s Reelection May Lead to Gun Confiscation

Arms Trade Treaty Banana Shootout

Pastor Chuck Baldwin is long past being polite and pulling his punches. In his latest newsletter he reminds us that people are beginning to become restless. The petitions on secession are mounting in numbers daily, and he thinks that’s a good thing. Not that they will have any impact whatsoever:

Does anyone believe that these states are really going to secede from the union? Of course not. At least, not yet. Citizen petitions are just that. In order for a State to secede it would have to be formally declared by an act of the State’s legislature and governor. Good luck finding many of those.

But they do represent a stirring of discontent which could be the beginning of something much bigger and more ominous. Baldwin thinks that Obama is going to be successful in ramming the UN small arms treaty through the Senate, which is the next step to enforced confiscation. He sees it coming,

Obama’s Support for the UN Arms Treaty is Back On

The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland...

The 2nd Amendment: America’s Original Homeland Security (Photo credit: afagen)

Less than 24 hours after being reelected, the president has taken the gloves off. Obama supports the UN gun control treaty but put his support “on hold” until after the election. He didn’t want to give Romney any more ammunition (so to speak) about Obama’s anti-Second Amendment intentions. Here’s the lead:

Last July, the U.N. General Assembly  began formal discussion of the Arms Trade Treaty [UNATT], which seeks to establish “common international standards for the import, export and transfer of  conventional arms…

Gun rights supporters blasted the treaty as it inched toward approval, and many  suspected U.S. procedural maneuvers were intended to delay the treaty so it wouldn’t become a topic of discussion during the election.

Naturally, the White House intones that it’s just a coincidence, and besides, the arms treaty doesn’t

The Not-So-Lame Duck Session

Phyllis Schlafly, a long-time activist and freedom fighter, just turned 88 in August, and is just as vigorous and vociferous in her views as ever. One of her concerns is that the lame duck session of the Senate could vote to approve one or more of those vicious UN treaties that haven’t been getting much attention in the mainstream media. Schlafly knows the score, and who’s behind the push:

The globalists have been plotting to use the volatility of this lame-duck session to achieve some of their internationalist goals that they couldn’t get passed during the last four years. In particular, they would like to lock us into treaties that slice out various parts of our national sovereignty, a concept that they have been trying to promote as obsolete.

One of the major pieces of a national sovereignty which the “globalists” consider as obsolete – actually more of an an impediment – is the Second Amendment:

The globalists could make a surprise treaty push for ratification of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (UNATT). This treaty is coming under the radar since gun control advocates know it could never pass the U.S. Senate after debate in broad daylight.

The gun control advocates assume that private ownership of guns is inherently dangerous. They hope they can achieve their goal of prohibiting private ownership by the covert strategy of a treaty with vague language, and, so far, they have been successful in avoiding media attention.

But this isn’t the only treaty that could be presented to

The Trouble with Outright Monetary Transactions

Mario Draghi presents his credentials as candi...

Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), spoke before Germany’s Parliament on Wednesday, defending his decision to purchase government bonds from member states needing financial assistance but without unleashing inflation. Similar to the Federal Reserve’s continuing attempts to stimulate the economy through the purchase of government securities, called Quantitative Easing, or QE, Draghi’s Outright Monetary Transactions, or OMT, “will not lead to inflation,” he claimed in the closed-door session. He said:

In our assessment, the greater risk to price stability is currently falling prices in some euro-area countries. In this sense, OMTs are not in contradiction to our mandate; in fact, they are essential for ensuring we can continue to achieve it.

This is utter nonsense, wrote Mish Shedlock, in his blog Global Economic Analysis. Since Draghi’s “mandate” is similar to that of the Federal Reserve — that is, to maintain price stability along with low unemployment — it’s impossible to increase the supply of money by buying government bonds with credits created out of thin air without eventually unleashing price inflation at the consumer level in the economy. Shedlock wrote:

The problem with such nonsense is you cannot break the law while screaming you are upholding it. Draghi now sounds and acts like hypocr[itical] US presidents of both political parties.

Both President Bush and President Obama (as well as the treasury departments under each administration) have shown little concern for the law. Increasingly presidents are of the mind [that] “we have to destroy capitalism [in order] to save it” or as President Bush stated and Obama practices: “ I’ve abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system.”

What the members of the German Parliament wanted to hear was that Draghi would not be
