Have nothing to do with the [evil] things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light... [For] when all things are brought out into the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed...

Pamela Geller is shut out of CPAC next week

I’ve heard her speak. Pamela Geller has rightly earned the sobriquet of “Islamaphobe” as she has railed in voice and word about “creeping Sharia” and “political Islam” in the US. There was standing room only for her talk when I first heard her.

And there have been standing room only crowds for her presentations in the past

There is No “Permanent” Fix for Social Security

This article was published by The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor on Monday, December 12, 2016:

Social Security Poster: old man

Social Security Poster:

There’s no doubt that Texas Representative Sam Johnson means well. He and his constituents are concerned about their financial futures and about the viability of Social Security as an important part of those futures. So on Thursday he offered his plan “to permanently save Social Security.” He calls it the “Social Security Reform Act.”

The plan doesn’t deserve a close look.

Texas Congressman Proposes “Permanent” Fix for Social Security

This article appeared online at TheNewAmerican.com on Saturday, December 10, 2016:

Congressman Sam Johnson (R-Texas), chairman of the House Ways and Means Social Security subcommittee, presented his plan, the “Social Security Reform Act,” on Thursday, which he called “a plan to permanently save Social Security.”

His proposal involves the same solutions often proposed by others trying to keep Social Security from going broke: cutting benefits, raising the retirement age, adding “means” testing, and cutting or eliminating altogether the COLA — Cost of Living Adjustment.

According to Michael Linden, an associate director at the liberal Center for American Progress, the cuts to benefits would be severe — between 11 percent and 35 percent — and they would include those already receiving Social Security benefits. Social Security actuaries who analyzed Johnson’s plan (at his request) came up with different numbers: Cuts would range from 17 percent to 43 percent but over a longer time period and with the same conclusion: everyone in Social Security (with the exception of the lowest-income participants) would take a hit under Johnson’s plan.

Nowhere in Johnson’s plan is any mention of privatizing the program, which is surprising, as it was a topic of discussion during the Republican presidential debates. Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry, and Ted Cruz all expressed their support for privatizing Social Security as the best way to solve its myriad problems.

Here are some of those problems:

Latest Poll Rejects Republican Politicians, Favors Newcomers in Presidential Field

This article was published by The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor on Wednesday, September 23, 2015:

One had to read well into CNN’s latest poll on the Republican contenders to discover a startling fact: Republicans, for the first time in memory, are rejecting Republican politicians en masse in favor of three who never have held political office. Here are the numbers from last week: Trump: 24 percent; Fiorina: 15 percent; Carson: 14 percent.

Much ado was made over Fiorina’s leapfrogging over Carson, and Trump’s fading by eight percentage points. But, deep into the report was this: “In a jam-packed GOP presidential field, the leading candidates are the only ones who have never held political office.” Here’s the math: those three are favored by 53 percent of Republican voters polled, leaving the remainder with the crumbs.

Gary North, an observer of the political scene ever since he worked as an assistant to Congressman Ron Paul in his Washington office in 1976, has never seen anything like it. In his members-only newsletter, North wrote:

On Sunday afternoon, Border Patrolman Javier Vega was enjoying some time off by fishing for gar in Santa Monica, Texas, along with his wife, three children, and his father, Javier, Sr. Two Mexican nationals approached Javier after he tied up his boat and demanded money. The conversation became heated and one of the nationals pulled a gun. Javier was shot once in the chest, fatally wounding him. His father, who was armed, returned fire, disabling the criminals’ vehicle. They were later arrested and charged with seven counts including capital murder, attempted capital murder, aggravated robbery, and tampering with evidence.

This article was first published by The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor on Friday, May 23, 2014:

Thanks to the current age of skepticism, aided and abetted by the internet, the “lipstick” strategy being used by Chris Christie is about to fail, revealing instead the economic pig that New Jersey has become during his administration.

Back in March 2012, Christie touted his budget that would only balance if a miracle occurred:

NJ Gov. Christie’s Conservative Light is Dimming

Chris Christie

Less than six months into his second term New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is having an increasingly difficult time pushing the New Jersey “comeback” theme that gained him reelection in January. This is in addition to the Bridge Gate scandal that has already seen five of his top lieutenants resign or be fired, with three investigations continuing into the matter.

First of all there’s the $807 million budget shortfall in his $33 billion budget that must be filled by the end of June. Then there’s the state’s credit rating which has been downgraded three times so far this year (it’s only May!) and

Armed marshals bill for schools in Texas is approved

I’m not moving to Portland, Maine, after all. I said last week I was moving there to take advantage of a free market doctor who has opted out of all insurance, public or private, and has gone “vet” – meaning cash only.

Instead, I’m moving to Texas, where common sense reigns supreme. Well, not totally. The teachers’ unions there are still stuck in the backwater of hoplophobia, but for normal people, training teachers to become marshals makes sense. Kinda makes me think of that bumper sticker from years ago: “Common sense, isn’t”.

By a vote of 28-3, the Texas state senate passed the “armed marshals” bill which is now headed to Governor Rick Perry’s desk for signing. It has been pushed by Lt. Gov. David Dewhirst (no doubt with Perry’s blessing) as a way to allow teachers to

Tim Phillips, a columnist at Townhall, reminded his readers that “out in the states we saw a year of broad-based victories for economic freedom that demonstrate anew that all is not lost. In fact, we are winning with the American people in many respects.”

Who, exactly, is the “we” that he is talking about? Phillips is the head of Americans for Prosperity, which was founded in 2004 and funded initially by the Koch brothers. It’s mission is to  promote conservative principles such as “limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels.” It has

Did Romney Make a Mistake in Turning Down Trump’s Debate?

Mitt Romney Steve Pearce event 057

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney declined Donald Trump’s invitation to participate in his December 27 debate, sponsored by Newsmax Media and ION TV in Des Moines, Iowa, saying “We [already] have two debates in December that I’ve agreed to participate in. The rest of the month will be spent campaigning.”

Trump was gracious in his response, saying: “It would seem logical to me that if I was substantially behind in the polls, especially in Iowa, South Carolina and Florida, I would want to participate in this debate. But I understand why Gov. Romney decided not to do it.”

But all Trump’s response did was to raise questions: Was Romney really that busy? Would his campaign benefit by his absence, appearing to be aloof and “above the fray” while his lessers battled between themselves? Did Romney want to put some distance between himself and Trump, as that relationship was appearing to be getting awfully cozy? Would Romney’s absence spell the death knell for the debate now that three of the contenders were planning to be campaigning elsewhere?

Keynesian Hacks Slander Republican Candidates

Caricatures: GOP Presidential Debate Participants

CNN’s article by Charles Riley quoted several of the Republican candidates for President out of context and then asked several unknown Keynesian economists—Keynesians believe in growing and empowering the government to stimulate the economy—to comment on those quotes. The result was a one-sided dismissal of anything the candidates had to say about the economy and how they might fix it.

For instance, Riley quoted Jonathan Lanning, an assistant professor at Bryn Mawr, as saying that “there are so many economic ‘misstatements’ being made, and it isn’t confined to any one candidate.” He went on to contend that if any of the Republican candidates were in his introductory economics class, Econ 101, they certainly wouldn’t

Rick Perry’s “Cut, Balance, and Grow” Plan Doesn’t Cut Much

Rick Perry Speaks at the Values Voter Summit

Texas Governor and Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry spelled out the details of his “Cut, Balance, and Grow” flat tax plan on October 25, saying that “the U.S. government spends too much. Taxes are too high, too complex, and too riddled with special-interest loopholes. And our expensive entitlement system is unsustainable in the long run.” Perry’s plan would offer taxpayers a choice between a new flat rate of 20 percent on incomes over $50,000, or their current income tax rate. The plan would allow them to file their taxes on a postcard, eliminating the enormous current compliance costs in filing their Form 1040s. Various deductions and exemptions would be eliminated, he says, thus improving incentives for entrepreneurs to invest, create, and hire.

In addition, Perry would cap government spending at 18 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and put a freeze on

Is Rick Perry Right? Is Social Security a Ponzi Scheme?

Presidential candidate Rick Perry opined in the first Republican debate that  Social Security is a “failure” and a “Ponzi scheme,” and then reiterated the charge in the second debate on Monday night. At the first debate, Perry said Social Security is a “Ponzi scheme for these young people. The idea…that the current program is going to be there for them is a lie.” When pressed by the moderator, Perry reiterated, saying Social Security is a “monstrous lie to our kids.”

On Monday night Perry refused to back down: “It is a Ponzi scheme to tell our kids that are 25 or 30 years old today, you’re paying into a program that’s going to be there. Anybody that’s for the status quo with Social Security today is involved with a monstrous lie to our kids, and it’s not right.” But in his op-ed piece in USA Today on Sunday, Perry backed off, writing instead that

Rush Limbaugh as GOP Kingmaker?

Rush Limbaugh

Cover of Rush Limbaugh

Zev Chafetswriting an op-ed for the New York Times, concluded that radio show host Rush Limbaugh “is the brains and the spirit behind [the conservative] resurgence.”

The writer claimed that “when the Tea Party movement emerged, Mr. Limbaugh welcomed it”:

The movement’s causes—fighting against health care reform, reducing the size and cost of government, opposing the Democrat’s putative desire to remake America in the image of European social democracies—were straight Limbaughism. A very high proportion of Tea Partiers listen to Mr. Limbaugh. Sarah Palin’s biggest current applause line—“Republicans are not just the party of no, but the party of hell no”—came courtesy of Mr. Limbaugh. Glenn Beck…calls Mr. Limbaugh his hero.
