Within minutes of Monday morning’s announcement by the credit-rating agency Standard & Poor’s that “we have revised our outlook on the long-term rating [for US government debt] to negative from stable,” the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 200 points.

In its announcement, the agency tried to soften the blow:

Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, is the organizer behind Thursday’s “Continuing Revolution” rally at the Capitol, and said that:

We expect to see a bunch of frustrated, angry patriots who want to see serious cuts to government spending. I think it’s a huge gut check. This is a way for us to judge [our congressmen] and see how serious they are and to prepare for the 2012 elections.

Tea Party-supported candidates promised during last fall’s campaign to cut the federal budget by at least $100 billion. Boehner’s words also generated a protest of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who accused Boehner of

In his “The Crystal Ball’s Final Calls” for Rasumssen Reports, political commentator Larry Sabato raised “raising the total [gain in the House] to +55 net R seats.” In the Senate, Sabato estimates a net gain of 8 seats by the Republicans. Political analyst Charlie Cook agrees: “To be honest, I think the odds are higher that [House gains will be] over 60 than under 40.” If he is wrong and Republicans fail to take control of the House, Cook said he’ll “be sacking groceries.”

In an early straw poll, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) was the choice for presidential nominee in 2012 over such conservative luminaries as Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, and Mitt Romney. Capturing 24 percent of those voting at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit this past weekend in Washington, DC, Pence relegated even Senator Jim DeMint to a barely visible 5 percent.
