Joe Thoele, an Effingham County, Illinois board member, was tired of his state’s continued assault on the Second Amendment and decided to do something about it. On Monday he persuaded seven of the other eight board members to declare his county a “sanctuary” county, ordering county employees not to enforce any new infringements coming from Springfield, the state’s capitol. Said Thoele, “I would just like to send a statement to Springfield that I don’t want them to be infringing on our Second Amendment rights as legal gun owners.” After all, echoed Effingham state’s attorney Bryan Kibler, “If you can be a sanctuary county for undocumented immigrants, why can’t you be one for firearms?”
The board meeting was attended by a near-record number of Effingham County’s 34,000 residents, according to local news sources. The Fox News affiliate reported that the resolution was motivated by a similar resolution passed by Iroquois County, Illinois, in March, “opposing the passage of … any bill where the 100th Illinois General Assembly desires to restrict the individual right of U.S. citizens as protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.” That resolution resolved

Deerfield, Illinois is a pleasant little town about 25 miles north of Chicago, a few miles west of Lake Michigan and just off Interstate 94. Temperatures are pleasant, registering average highs of 85 in the summer and in the low 20s in the winter. Its population hasn’t changed much in the last ten years, as the town and environs have gained and lost businesses over those years. It’s currently home to Walgreens Boots, Baxter Healthcare, Consumers Digest, and Caterpillar. It used to be headquarters of the Sara Lee Corporation but that closed down in 1990 and the company sold its land to developers.
There are about 20,000 people living there, in an estimated 6,420 households (which datum will be important later on in this article). The local government consists of a mayor and a board of trustees. It considers itself a village, and is represented in the House of Representatives by Democrat Brad Schneider, whose Freedom Index is a treasonous 16 out of 100.
That should explain why the mayor, Harriet Rosenthal, and the board of trustees decided it would do its bit in fighting violent crime and mass shootings: inflict pain on its law-abiding citizens through one of the most draconian and tyrannical pieces of anti-gun legislation to come down the pike in some time. So committed is the mainstream media in the United States to their purpose – destroy Trump in any way they can – that it took a foreign journalist to point out to them what they are really doing. Writing in the U.S. edition of the liberal British news magazine The Week, journalist Matthew Walther, said:
It’s not surprising that after little more than a year in office, many people who voted for the president still support him. But it’s also surprising that a president who has been the object of more negative reporting than any in our history still enjoys something like the same middling base of support he had before taking office.

With the death last week of “liberal lion” Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, there are now seven vacancies on the 29-judge court — a court so liberal that 80 percent of its decision are reversed when appealed to the Supreme Court. However, the unusual number of vacancies means one fourth of the composition of the Ninth Circuit could be Trump nominees, not enough to make it conservative but enough to move the court to the right.

The president’s problem with the 9th Circuit – provably the most liberal court in the land with a nearly 80 percent reversal rate on rulings that are appealed to and considered by the Supreme Court – may be the same faced by George Armstrong Custer: there were just too many Indians! In Trump’s case, there may be too many liberals, both on the court and in the Senate for him to make any substantive change, no matter how desperate the need.

If by “snowflake” one can accept the definition of Francis Dickinson, a Green Party activist, then snowflakes at the dormitory that houses La Associacion Latina (LAL) on the Cornell University campus had a meltdown last week. Dickinson defines a “snowflake” as “an insult, short for ‘special snowflake’ [which includes] all young liberals [who] think they are special and precious and unique and the world should revolve around them. And they will melt into a puddle when anything goes wrong.”
At 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6, something went wrong, and the folks in the dorm melted into a puddle. Several of the LAL students claimed that they heard voices coming from the Zeta Psi fraternity next door chanting, “Build a wall! Build a wall!” The offense occurred the day after President Trump announced his pushback against DACA, and so the LAL students were on high alert for anything that might injure their tender sensibilities.

The latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) over SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) reveals a sharp drop in participation in the program, touching lows not seen since before 2010. In 2016, 44 million Americans and immigrants (legal and illegal) took advantage of taxpayers’ largess, costing $71 billion. In 2010, there were 47 million receiving SNAP benefits, costing taxpayers closer to $80 billion.
The program, which began in 1969, has virtually exploded, from just two million that year (costing taxpayers a paltry $250 million) to a peak of 47.6 million in 2013, which cost taxpayers $79.9 billion.

Modest revisions to the federal government’s present SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) proposed by Trump’s budget released last week have drawn howls of protests from predictable places. The New York Times and ThinkProgress are calling the cuts “full of horror,” “backbreaking,” and sufficient to “destroy the food stamp program.”
What’s proposed is a cut of less than $20 billion a year to a program that currently costs taxpayers more than $70 billion annually. It also would involve a modest shift of financial responsibility back to the states where it properly belongs.

Less well known, perhaps, than the Second Amendment are the Ninth and Tenth Amendments, efforts by the founders to chain down the national government “from mischief.” Attorney General Jeff Sessions appears to need a refresher course in them, to wit:
The Ninth Amendment: “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people”; and
The Tenth Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
What Sessions appears to have forgotten is that law enforcement is to be left largely up to the states, closer to the people themselves, and thus easier to control. Communists, on the other hand, have been pointed in their attacks on local law enforcement, which keeps getting in the way of installing a national police force.
Speaking in Richmond, Virginia last week, Sessions addressed a gathering of federal, state, and local law enforcement officials and expressed his concerns about the rising rate of violent crime in the US over the past two years. He doesn’t think it’s an anomaly:

When District Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis dismissed the lawsuit last month brought against Remington Arms by families of victims following the massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, the plaintiffs’ attorney said they planned to appeal. That appeal was filed on Tuesday with the Connecticut Supreme Court.
