More Fake News: NRA Bans Guns at Its Own Convention!

It all started with an Associated Press (AP) tweet: “NRA bans guns at President Trump, VP Pence speeches during it’s [sic] annual meeting in Dallas.” The Washington Post jumped on it, as if it were real news, offering a misleading headline to its story: “The NRA said guns will be banned during a Pence speech; Parkland students see hypocrisy.”

This likely reflected a tweet from one of the “heroes” of the Parkland, Florida, massacre, Cameron Kasky, who is credited with founding the anti-gun group March for Our Lives. Tweeted Kasky: “The NRA has evolved into such a hilarious parody of itself.”

Parkland High School Survivor Questioned After Going to a Shooting Range

When Kyle Kashuv, one of the more prominent figures in the ongoing debate about what to do to reduce high school mass shootings, went to a shooting range with his father last Friday, the first thing he did was post some pictures and some pro-Second Amendment comments on Twitter.

He should have known better. With the pain still fresh from the massacre that took place there on Valentine’s Day, he shouldn’t have been surprised at the response. A few of his fellow students at Marjory Stoneman High School took umbrage and reported his Twitter pictures and comments to school authorities. Kashuv explained what happened next:

CDC Buried Data Supporting Defensive Use of Firearms

Gary Kleck, a criminologist now retired from Florida State University, was likely astonished to learn that his controversial study, The National Self-Defense Survey, was accurate after all. He and FSU fellow professor Marc Gertz concluded, based on their carefully-crafted surveys conducted in 1993, that there were more than 2.2 million defensive gun uses (DGU) each year in the United States. The results were presented in 1994, published in 1995, and have been incessantly attacked by the anti-gun movement ever since. His conclusions didn’t fit the anti-gun narrative that guns are used in crimes far more than in self-defense and therefore private ownership must be abolished.

Kleck just learned that almost immediately after the publication of his study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal agency that receives more than $11 billion of taxpayer money every year, conducted its own study of the matter. It conducted three separate studies, in fact, and each of them came to the same conclusion as Kleck and Gertz: indeed, about 2.5 million Americans use guns to defend themselves or their families every year.

But the CDC studies were never published.

It would have infuriated the powers-that-be in the Clinton administration, and so the results were buried.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Will Destroy All Its “Assault-style” Rifle Inventory

When Ed Stack, president of Dick’s Sporting Goods, announced in February (following the Parkland, Florida massacre) that his company would no longer be selling “semi-automatic” rifles in his stores, he stated:

We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens.

But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America — our kids.

What he failed to mention at the time was that the decision affected only 35 stores (those in its Field & Stream division), because back in 2012 he pulled all semi-automatic rifles from the shelves of his signature stores — all 800 of them.

Second Amendment supporters, including The New American, saw this clearly as “posturing” — taking an opportunity to promote his anti-gun views on ABC News when he told the liberal network: “We’re taking these guns out of all our stores permanently.”

Adding to the obvious hypocrisy, Stack continues to allow his stores to sell semi-automatic handguns as well as the well-known and popular Ruger Mini-14, a semi-automatic rifle.

Pro-gun supporters noted that Stack was focusing on the wrong target.

Would Ed Stack Burn His Company to the Ground Just to Make a Point?

Dick Stack opened his first store – a “bait and tackle” fishing supplies store – in Binghamton, New York in 1948. By the time his son Eddie was born in 1955, Dick had grown the business to include general sports merchandise, and by the early 1960s he built his first store, calling it “Dick’s Sporting Goods.” When son Eddie entered the business in 1977 they had two stores. Eddie had a knack, and the business grew. Dick let Eddie take over the business entirely in 1984 (Eddie was 29) and the two-store business became a chain operation by the early 1990s.

Today the business has 800 stores mostly in the Eastern United States, and owns and operates a golf specialty retailer, Golf Galaxy, True Runner and Field & Stream (no relation to the publication). Its Sports Authority and Golfsmith operations went bankrupt in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The business turned Eddie into a billionaire.

And, apparently, a liberal. When the Parkland, Florida massacre took place in February, Eddie issued a press release saying that one of his stores had sold a shotgun to the perp although he didn’t use it in the massacre. But Eddie used the incident as a reason to stop selling so-called “assault” rifles – semi-automatic (one squeeze, one shot) rifles at his primary outlets, numbering about 650 at the time. He said:

Joe Thoele, an Effingham County, Illinois board member, was tired of his state’s continued assault on the Second Amendment and decided to do something about it. On Monday he persuaded seven of the other eight board members to declare his county a “sanctuary” county, ordering county employees not to enforce any new infringements coming from Springfield, the state’s capitol. Said Thoele, “I would just like to send a statement to Springfield that I don’t want them to be infringing on our Second Amendment rights as legal gun owners.” After all, echoed Effingham state’s attorney Bryan Kibler, “If you can be a sanctuary county for undocumented immigrants, why can’t you be one for firearms?”

The board meeting was attended by a near-record number of Effingham County’s 34,000 residents, according to local news sources. The Fox News affiliate reported that the resolution was motivated by a similar resolution passed by Iroquois County, Illinois, in March, “opposing the passage of … any bill where the 100th Illinois General Assembly desires to restrict the individual right of U.S. citizens as protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.” That resolution resolved

Deerfield, Illinois, Passes “Assault Weapons” Ban Effective June 13

The unanimous approval by the Deerfield, Illinois, Village Board of Trustees of a nearly complete ban on all manner of loosely defined “assault weapons” last Monday night has made headline news. It has also generated at least two lawsuits complaining that the law, to become effective June 13, is unconstitutional under Illinois state law.

In addition, the ban has generated significant pushback from enraged citizens who are threatening to ignore the law if it becomes effective.

High-school Students Stage Walkout to Support the Second Amendment

The completely unplanned, unstaged, unfunded, and spontaneous gathering of 75 students outside Rockledge High School in Brevard County, Florida, last Friday morning was almost completely ignored by the mainstream media. Organized by Chloe Deaton, a sophomore, and Anna Delaney, a junior, the event lasted 20 minutes, just long enough to make their point: Other students in the same high school and around the country who urged more infringements on the people’s right to keep and bear arms didn’t speak for them.

After playing the national anthem (no one kneeled) and “God Bless America” on loudspeakers set up on the school’s track, Delaney told her classmates, “We were built on certain rights and that was one of the original rights, that we should have the right to bear arms.” She can be forgiven for failing to note that the right to self-defense and, thereby, the access to tools useful for self-defense are natural rights and pre-date the Constitution.

She made up for her misstatement by quoting President Ronald Reagan, who got it right:

Remington Arms filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 in Delaware on Sunday evening. Directors of the 200-year-old company — America’s oldest gun maker — threw in the towel: “Directors have determined that it is advisable and in the best interests of the Company that the Company file … a Voluntary Petition … for Chapter 11 [bankruptcy].”

Observers blamed the president and Adam Lanza for the filing. Remington’s sales of its iconic shotguns, rifles, and pistols were increasing during the 2016 presidential election as American gun owners, fearing that anti-gun Hillary Clinton would assume the presidency in November, went on a buying spree. When Donald Trump won, those gun buyers not only breathed a sigh of relief, they ended the spree, leaving gun shops with vast inventories and gun manufacturers such as Remington with falling sales and revenues.

Others blamed Adam Lanza for using one of Remington’s products, its Bushmaster AR-15, to kill 20 youngsters in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012. They note that the families of those victims filed a class-action wrongful-death lawsuit against Remington two years later, which lawsuit is presently before the Connecticut Supreme Court.

Those much more familiar with Remington’s recent history are blaming the company itself

So much softer were the president’s gun proposals released Sunday night than were expected that liberals started howling immediately. They were expecting President Trump to push for a raise in the age to purchase rifles, possibly a ban on so-called assault rifles, support for universal background checks, and the NICS “fix” promoted by Senators John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). Instead they got this tweet from the president: “Very strong improvement and strengthening of background checks will be fully backed by White House. Legislation moving forward. Bump Stocks will soon be out. Highly trained teachers will be allowed to conceal carry, subject to State Law. Armed guards OK, deterrent!”

Movie buffs will remember the 2002 science fiction film Minority Report based on a short story written by Philip Dick. Set in 2054 in Washington, D.C., a division of the local police department called PreCrime would arrest individuals based on crimes that they were going to commit. The precriminals were targeted by three psychics called “precogs.”

That “PreCrime” unit is now called the Crisis Response Squad, is part of the Seattle Police Department, and is now arresting precriminals based on testimonies from family members, friends, former wives or husbands, and even former roommates. This isn’t 2054, but 2018.

No Weapons Violations in First Six Months of Campus Carry at KU Lawrence

In a report that the national media didn’t deem newsworthy, the Office of Public Safety at the Lawrence campus of the University of Kansas (KU) said last week that during the first six months that students were allowed to carry concealed on campus, there were no incidents — zero criminal weapons violations — to report. But the office did report that overall crime, mostly thefts, dropped by 13 percent.

The report said nothing about the freedom granted students starting last July to carry concealed on campus if they so desired, but instead stated that the drop in crime and the utter lack of weapons violations were likely due to “the use of security technology on campus, such as cameras … and more police and security officers [that] were added to the Public Safety Office in 2017.”

Undoubtedly, if there had been one weapons violation — just one — it would have made headline news in every liberal media outlet in the country. But in its absence, the media has remained silent.

More Schools Allow Teachers and Staff to Arm Themselves

During the Pike County, Kentucky, school board hearing last Wednesday night, the board reached a unanimous decision to approve arming teachers and staff at the county’s 25 schools. Predictably, Executive Director Jon Akers of the Kentucky Center for School Safety said that “every educational group across the country” opposes the idea.

Said Akers, the idea “scares me to death … arming people who are not trained equal to that of law enforcement officers is risky.”

Akers’ argument, like so many being offered by people such as him, just doesn’t hold any water. Under the new proposal, school teachers and staff could volunteer to carry concealed at the schools, but only after passing a background check, a drug test, a mental evaluation, and a qualification course. And they would have to requalify regularly.

Teachers’ unions are nearly out of arguments, especially in light of the massacre of innocents in Florida on Valentine’s Day. Those innocent students had no chance to defend themselves because the school was declared a “gun free” zone. Those opposed to arming teachers say that such programs

Do Anti-gun Democrats Have a Death Wish, Offering a Gun Ban Bill in an Election year?

When the liberal Huffington Post did its research, it was horrified to find not only that the worst political disasters took place during mid-term elections, but that third on the list was the cleansing of anti-gun Democrats in the 1994 midterms. Voters, outraged at their passage of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (aka the Clinton assault weapons ban), removed eight Democrat senators and 56 House Democrats. This resulted in the first time Republicans were in control of the House since Eisenhower.

But, as philosopher George Santayana noted, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Guilty of not knowing or remembering their political history are some 165 House Democrats who have signed on to a bill echoing Clinton’s gun ban: Rep. David Cicilline’s Assault Weapons Ban of 2018. Cicilline’s bill prohibits the “sale, transfer, production, and importation” of semi-automatic rifles and pistols that can hold a detachable magazine, as well as semi-automatic rifles with a magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds” of ammunition. Also to be banned would be semi-automatic shotguns and magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. His bill lists 205 specific firearms that would be prohibited, including the AK-47 and the AR-15.

These anti-gun pols also have forgotten why the Clinton-era gun ban failed to be resurrected in 2004: there was no credible evidence from any source that it had any impact on gun violence. As recently as April 17, 2013, the Senate voted down a measure that would have restored it, 40 to 60.

Anti-gun Democrats Introduce Clinton-style Assault Weapons Ban

House Representative David Cicilline (D-R.I.) introduced a bill last week similar to the Clinton-era Federal Assault Weapons Ban but with even greater restrictions. So far 163 of the 193 House Democrats have signed on in support of the bill. Cicilline’s rant against semi-automatic rifles is familiar:

Assault weapons were made for one purpose. They are designed to kill as many people as possible in a short period of time. They do not belong in our communities.

I am proud to introduce the Assault Weapons Ban with the support of leaders in law enforcement. It’s on all of us to end this carnage.

Of course, if semi-automatic firearms were actually able to commit crimes without human assistance, then the ban would make sense. Who would want self-firing weapons walking around the neighborhood unrestricted? But that appears not to matter to Cicilline — who sports a F-minus rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and a Freedom Index (FI) rating of 26 percent from The New American , and who was a founding member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns while he was the mayor of Providence.

Such illogic also appeared in the words of Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), representing several counties including Broward where the Valentine’s Day massacre took place) — with an FI of just 17 percent — as he announced he was supporting Cicilline’s bill:

Pilots Are Armed, Why Not Teachers?

Chad Robichaux, a former special agent with the U.S. Federal Air Marshall Service, has been here before. Objections to arming pilots following the Islamic terror attacks on September 11, 2001 were the same as those being raised against arming teachers. Said Robichaux on Breitbart News Tonight last Thursday: “Well, you trust them [pilots] flying your airplane. So now people are saying, ‘We can’t trust teachers with firearms.’ We trust them with our children!”

Robichaux worked with the Federal Air Marshall Service in developing and implementing the pilot training program launched following the 9/11 attacks and said that the present hostility toward arming teachers is the same that was voiced against the arming of pilots.

When President Trump learned that a Broward County (Florida) sheriff could have ended the shooting spree almost immediately but didn’t, he told a reporter: “He [Scot Peterson] trained his whole life. When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn’t have the courage or something happened, but he certainly did a poor job – there’s no question about that.”

If the reporter asked Trump what he meant by “something happened” it was not recorded. But the president, who knows more than he is allowed to say about such incidents, might have given away the scam.
