Have nothing to do with the [evil] things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light... [For] when all things are brought out into the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed...

Obama Way Over His Head at the APEC Summit

This article first appeared at The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor on Friday, November 14, 2014:

Xi Jinping. China’s “Paramount Leader”

Nowhere was President Obama’s shrinking influence in world affairs more apparent than when he opened the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Beijing earlier this week by announcing an “agreement” with China’s “paramount leader,” Xi Jinping, to extend visas in both countries from one year to ten. The enhancements will have little real world impact but they served to give Obama the appearance of being a player.

A U.S. visa only serves as preliminary permission to seek admission to the United States. Final admission remains, as it always has, in the hands of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer who, after questioning and investigation of the nonimmigrant’s purposes, will then issue a Form I-94. That form serves as the official government document authorizing the alien’s stay in the country.

Nevertheless, Obama made the most of it:

In an effort to shore up his shrinking political influence following the shellacking the Democrat Party took in last week’s midterm elections, President Obama offered a modest bouquet to China’s “paramount leader” at the opening of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Beijing on Monday. He touted the tentative agreement he and China’s President Xi Jinping had come to concerning visas issued by each country.

As of November 12th, the United States will start granting visas to Chinese visitors that are valid for up to 10 years instead of just one. That this was just an opening bid in the game populated by card sharks was clear from Obama’s initial remarks:

Fracking Mythbusters

This is the second of two articles on fracking that will appear shortly in the print edition of The New American magazine:

Myths become reality only when they are left unchallenged. There are so many myths, half-truths, misstatements, and distortions about the issue of fracking that one scarcely knows where to begin. The most egregious is the falsehood that “you can light your tap water on fire because of fracking.”

This canard first saw the light of day in Gasland, a propaganda piece produced by Josh Fox (pictured below) and funded and supported by various extremist members and groups affiliated with the environmental movement. Early in the film, Fox showed a flaming faucet belonging to Weld County, Colorado, homeowner Mike Markham. In that segment, when a lighted match touched water flowing from his kitchen faucet, it virtually exploded into flame.

Not mentioned in that sequence, however, was that Markham knew about his flaming faucet well before Fox showed up on his doorstep with his cameramen and that he also knew that

What’s Behind the Attack on Fracking?

The following is the text of a talk I made in September to some oil industry people in Nashville:

In the opening sequence of the movie Gasland, Josh Fox, the film’s producer, said:

One day I got a letter in the mail. It was from a natural gas company. The letter told me that my land was on top of a formation that was called the Marcellus Shale which stretched across Pennsylvania… New York… Ohio… and West Virginia… and that the Marcellus Shale was the “Saudi Arabia” of natural gas.

I could lease my land to this company and I would receive a signing bonus of $4750 an acre. Having 19.5 acres, that was nearly $100,000… Right there in my hand. Could it be that easy?

No, it couldn’t.

Link Between Fracking and Earthquakes Remains Tenuous, Say Experts

This article first appeared at TheNewAmerican.com on Friday, July 11, 2014:

On July 3, Science magazine reported that, using its models in place of data they claimed was unavailable, water flowing from fracking disposal wells in Oklahoma “is potentially responsible for the largest swarm” of earthquakes recently noted in that state. The report, available in full to subscribers only, was immediately picked up by the Los Angeles Times, which said the study confirmed the link between fracking and the earthquakes.

Science, published by the environmentalist group American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has maintained a veneer of credibility for years while promoting the questionable science behind global warming. In December 2006, AAAS adopted an official statement on climate change:

Climate Changers Commit Fraud by Changing the Numbers

The James Hansens of the world just can’t seem to catch a break. Before he supported APG – anthropogenic global warming – he scoffed at it. Climategate added to the pile of woes facing those predicting the end of humankind thanks to global warming, while the list of legitimate scientists (those without funding and therefore not beholden) continues to grow longer almost by the day.

That’s how truth will out: drip by drip by drip.

Steven Goddard, who blogs at Real Science, explained how he happened to learn about NASA’s latest manipulation of US temperature data:

Writing in his Real Science blog, Steven Goddard explained how he found out that NASA had altered US temperature readings to show a warming trend where none existed: he compared graphs published on NASA’s website in 1999 to those available today. He even set up an animation of the two temperature graphs to show the extent of the fraud.

He went further by exhuming quotes from climate changers who also have changed their opinions, including the infamous James Hansen. In 2003 Hansen authored a paper for the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change entitled “Can We Defuse the Global Warming Time Bomb?” in which he concluded that “halting global warming requires urgent, unprecedented international cooperation…” with the clear implication that

Last week the British newspaper Telegraph leaked a portion of the report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) due to be released today, in which Robert Mendick, the paper’s chief reporter, said the UN now officially warns that growing food for fuel rather than for people hurts the environment and starves people. Said Mendick:

Age and Acrimony End Dingell Dynasty in the House

Born in Colorado Springs in 1926, John Dingell (D-Mich.) took over from his father as a Representative from Michigan in 1955 and has never stopped promoting his father’s progressive agenda. On Monday, February 24th, Dingell announced that he would not seek a 30th term partly due to

Obama Links California Drought to Climate Change

President Obama had plenty of photo ops in California last Friday as he strolled farmlands parched by the ongoing drought. To them he added the inevitable offer of government money to help those suffering – money that presumably belongs to taxpayers outside the drought area. He reiterated the long-questioned connection between climate change and the drought:

The “Stadium Wave” Explains Flat Temperatures for the Past 15 Years

This article first appeared at The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor on Friday, November 8th, 2013:

Judith Curry’s explanation as to why global temperatures have not changed for the past 15 years makes too much sense, so the global climate-changers are scrambling to find other causes.

Curry is the head of Georgia Tech’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and in her press release she explained the climate-changers’ predicament:

“Stadium Wave” Phenomenon Defeats Climate-changers’ Claims

In its press release, Georgia Tech announced that stadium waves, similar to those seen and enjoyed by fans at football games, may provide a much better explanation for the “hiatus” or interruption in global temperature increases than those promoted elsewhere:

The stadium wave hypothesis provides a

US oil output is up 25 percent from just one year ago

If the increase in US oil output continues to increase by 25% every year, as it did from September 2012 to September 2013, total US output would double every three years. It’s a simple case of mathematics, compound interest, and the Rule of 72.

The main thing working to keep that from happening is

Ronald Bailey, who has specialized in exposing myths in the field of biotechnology for years, took great joy in exposing some popular myths about fracking over at Reason magazine where he writes a weekly science and technology column.

Bailey is best known for his book “Global Warming and Other Eco Myths” which exploded some popular myths, such as:

Obama the green dictator

My good friend Bill Jasper at The New American has just written about the Economist‘s about-face on climate change. This change in attitude, as the Economist itself notes, is “a very big deal.”

But good friend Bill fails (I hesitate even to suggest a criticism of his position) to note that

Global Cooling, Not Global Warming, After All

Today is Earth Day. Let’s celebrate free markets that keep things green and growing!

Once again my economic friend Donald Boudreaux has simplified the complex while avoiding the sarcasm that so many are expressing over the celebration of Earth Day. 192 countries have joined in the chorus so it’s a fact of life. We can ridicule it as silliness but there it is. Instead, Boudreaux reminds us that

14,000 Idle Wind Turbines a Testament to Failed Energy Policies

When Element Power announced on Wednesday the closing of a deal to build wind turbines for Blackrock in Ireland, nothing was said about the more than 14,000 other wind turbines lying idle across the world. Instead, Jim Barry, Managing Director for BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, expressed great pleasure at its new venture with Element:
