High-school Students Stage Walkout to Support the Second Amendment

The completely unplanned, unstaged, unfunded, and spontaneous gathering of 75 students outside Rockledge High School in Brevard County, Florida, last Friday morning was almost completely ignored by the mainstream media. Organized by Chloe Deaton, a sophomore, and Anna Delaney, a junior, the event lasted 20 minutes, just long enough to make their point: Other students in the same high school and around the country who urged more infringements on the people’s right to keep and bear arms didn’t speak for them.

After playing the national anthem (no one kneeled) and “God Bless America” on loudspeakers set up on the school’s track, Delaney told her classmates, “We were built on certain rights and that was one of the original rights, that we should have the right to bear arms.” She can be forgiven for failing to note that the right to self-defense and, thereby, the access to tools useful for self-defense are natural rights and pre-date the Constitution.

She made up for her misstatement by quoting President Ronald Reagan, who got it right:

When President Trump learned that a Broward County (Florida) sheriff could have ended the shooting spree almost immediately but didn’t, he told a reporter: “He [Scot Peterson] trained his whole life. When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn’t have the courage or something happened, but he certainly did a poor job – there’s no question about that.”

If the reporter asked Trump what he meant by “something happened” it was not recorded. But the president, who knows more than he is allowed to say about such incidents, might have given away the scam.

Media Ignore Real Hero in Florida Shooting: Unarmed Off-duty Police Officer Heinrich

It is Coral Springs Police Department Sergeant Jeff Heinrich who deserves most of the credit in ending the shooting spree by Nikolas Cruz, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last Wednesday. Unfortunately nearly all media attention has been focused on the “failures” of Sheriff Scot Peterson, entrusted with maintaining safety on the school grounds, and three other deputies who showed up shortly after the shooting began. Those failures included a decision not to confront the shooter for at least four minutes, allowing him to kill 17 people and wound many more. The delay also allowed the shooter to leave the scene in the chaos of students fleeing the building without being noticed or apprehended.

Heinrich is a long-time supporter of the school. His wife is an assistant athletic director, and their son is a student (who survived the shooting). Heinrich was off-duty, unarmed, wearing just shorts and a t-shirt, and watering the baseball field when he first heard the fire alarm go off followed by rifle shots. He immediately ran toward the sound of gunfire. Reporters with the local paper Tribunist wrote what happened next:

Trump Gives Clear Signal that He is a Christian

There is scarcely a newborn Christian who doesn’t know and rejoice in the Apostle Paul’s confirmation of his salvation in his letter to baby Christians living in Ephesus in the first century. It’s Ephesians Chapter 2, verses 8 through 10. First, the New International Version (NIV):

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Some consider the New Living Translation (NLT) to be a little more “user-friendly”:

God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this: it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.

When President Trump deliberately and intentionally inserted part of this into his speech on Thursday at the Prayer Breakfast attended by an estimated 3,000 evangelicals, he was sending a message: I am saved by the grace of God through faith.

An Open Letter to NFL Players

You graduated from high school in 2011. Your teenage years were a struggle. You grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Your mother was the leader of the family because your father was absent and worked tirelessly to keep a roof over your head and food on your plate.. Academics were a struggle for you and your grades were mediocre at best. The only thing that made you stand out is you weighed 225 lbs and could run 40 yards in 4.2 seconds while carrying a football. Your best friend was just like you, except he didn’t play football. Instead of going to football practice after school, he went to work at McDonald’s for minimum wage. You were recruited by all the big colleges and spent every weekend of your senior year making visits to universities where coaches and boosters tried to convince you their school was the best. They laid out the red carpet for you. Your best friend worked double shifts at Mickey D’s. College was not an option for him. On the day you signed with Big State University, your best friend signed paperwork with his Army recruiter. You went to summer workouts. He went to basic training.

You spent the next four years living in the athletic dorm, eating at the training table. You spent your Saturdays on the football field, cheered on by adoring fans. Tutors attended to your every academic need. You attended class when you felt like it. Sure, you worked hard. You lifted weights, ran sprints, studied plays, and soon became one of the top football players in the country.

Your best friend was assigned to the 101^st Airborne Division. While you were in college, he deployed to Iraq once and Afghanistan twice. He became a Sergeant and led a squad of 19 year old soldiers who grew up just like he did. He shed his blood in Afghanistan and watched young American’s give their lives, limbs, and innocence for the USA.

You went to the NFL combine and scored off the charts. You hired an agent and waited for draft day. You were drafted in the first round and your agent immediately went to work, ensuring that you received the most money possible. You signed for $16 million although you had never played a single down of professional football. Your best friend re-enlisted in the Army for four more years. As a combat tested sergeant, he will be paid $32,000 per year.

You will drive a Ferrari on the streets of South Beach. He will ride in the back of a Blackhawk helicopter with 10 other combat-ready soldiers. You will sleep at the Ritz. He will dig a hole in the ground and try to sleep. You will “make it rain” in the club. He will pray for rain as the temperature reaches 120 degrees.

On Sunday, you will run into a stadium as tens of thousands of fans cheer and yell your name. For your best friend, there is little difference between Sunday and any other day of the week. There are no adoring fans. There are only people trying to kill him and his soldiers. Every now and then, he and his soldiers leave the front lines and “go to the rear” to rest. He might be lucky enough to catch an NFL game on TV. When the National Anthem plays and you take a knee, he will jump to his feet and salute the television. While you protest the unfairness of life in the United States, he will give thanks to God that he has the honor of defending this great country.

To the players of the NFL: We are the people who buy your tickets, watch you on TV, and wear your jerseys. We anxiously wait for Sundays so we can cheer for you and marvel at your athleticism. Although we love to watch you play, we care little about your opinions until you offend us. You have the absolute right to express yourselves, but we have the absolute right to boycott you. We have tolerated your drug use and DUIs, your domestic violence, your vulgar displays of wealth and your wearisome selfish displays in the end zone. We should be ashamed for putting our admiration of your physical skills before what is morally right. But now you have gone too far. You have insulted our flag, our country, our soldiers, our police officers, and our veterans. You are living the American dream, yet you disparage our great country. I am done with NFL football and encourage all like minded Americans to boycott the NFL as well.

Personal suffering under socialist and communist regimes is often buried under mounds of statistics. In Venezuela, for example, observers know that Maduro’s madness has caused its economy to shrink by a quarter since 2013, that unemployment touches one out of four, that the bolivar is essentially worthless thanks to runaway inflation, that grocery stores and supermarkets have miles of empty shelves, that dozens of protesters have been shot and killed, thousands of others have been arrested and are rotting away in filthy jails with some of them being tortured daily, and on and on.

Once in a while, however, the truth bubbles to the surface, sometimes in out-of-the-way places.

February Jobs Numbers Explode, Blowing Past Economists’ Expectations

The ADP/Moody’s jobs report released on Wednesday showed job growth 50-percent ahead of Wall Street’s expectations: 298,000 jobs were created in February versus expectations of less than 200,000 by economists polled by the Wall Street Journal. The job growth was all across the spectrum, with construction and manufacturing sectors adding 106,000 new jobs.

The report, sponsored by ADP, a human resources management company with more than 400,000 business clients, and aided by Moody’s Analytics, was based on performance reported during the month to both entities. Mark Zandi, Moody’s chief economist, commented on the remarkable February numbers:

Following the Paris attacks, Detroit police chief James Craig (shown above) reiterated his policy of encouraging his citizens to continue to arm themselves:

A lot of Detroiters have CPLs (concealed pistol licenses), and the same rules apply to terrorists as they do to some gun-toting thug: if you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.

Since his arrival in Detroit in 2012, Craig has seen his citizens heed his call and has simultaneously seen violent crime fall significantly. Seven thousand of them received their CPLs the year after Craig took over, and another 7,500 were added to the rolls a year later. At present nearly one in every 20 Detroiters is carrying concealed.

One day in May, 2013, Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling’s boss entered her cubicle at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina and told her to remove three Scriptures she had attached to her computer monitor and her walls. Sterling refused.

The next morning Sterling discovered them in her trash basket. She put them back up on her computer screen and walls and that’s when the trouble began. In May 2013, Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling posted a modified iteration of Isaiah 54:17 on her computer monitor and elsewhere on the walls of her cubicle in Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, as inspiration and an expression of her faith. Isaiah 54:17 says: “’No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,’ declares the Lord.”

Sterling shortened it to read: “No weapon forged against me shall prosper.” When her staff sergeant ordered her to remove it, Sterling refused. The next day Sterling found that the verses had been removed and put into her trash basket. She put them back, and that’s when her troubles began.

On Tuesday, as part of his continuing quest to bring Wisconsin’s government spending under control, Governor Scott Walker announced a 13-percent cut to the University of Wisconsin’s $2.3 billion annual budget. In addition, his plan includes a two-year tuition freeze and the severance of state control over the university, passing it over to an autonomous authority. It also includes drug testing for people applying for public assistance, the merging of several state agencies, and the elimination of 400 state jobs. Walker explained: “Our plan will use common-sense reforms to create a government that is limited in scope and ultimately more effective, more efficient and more accountable.”

He also made clear in a radio interview that professors are going to have to ante up as well:

The sheriff of Fulton County, New York, Thomas Lorey, made a presentation to some Second Amendment supporters on Friday, January 16. The next day seven minutes of it was posted on YouTube. He told them that Fulton County has been targeted by New York’s state capital, Albany, for a “pilot program” to see if those owning handguns in his county would desire to renew their permits to possess them early, for a small fee of $15. (In New York, one must have a permit to even own a handgun.) He was very against renewing the permits early, or renewing them at all, for that matter. He explained:

I want to set the record straight. Fulton County is one of the pilot counties.… They are going to send out 500 invitations to my county and that’s all they are … invitations.

I’m asking everyone that gets those invitations to throw them in the trash because that is where they belong.

Latest Poll: Vast Majority Oppose Gas Tax Increase

A new poll from Benson Strategy Group confirms not only that most Americans don’t want an increase in their gasoline taxes but that they’re afraid Congress will enact one anyway. Coming on the heels of Republicans joining with Democrats to pass a pork-laden CRomnibus bill earlier this week, the poll’s results show that two out of every three Americans don’t want to pay more at the pump.

Those polled are likely also concerned that the recent precipitous drop in the price of gas will be seized by the Congress as an opportunity to raise the tax with minimal initial pain to drivers.

An early attempt by a safe-district liberal Democrat from Oregon, Earl Blumenauer, a year ago to raise gas taxes by 15 cents a gallon failed to gain any traction, with just one co-sponsorship coming from a House member who knew he would be retiring this year.

To no one’s surprise, Rasmussen reported on Friday that fewer than 1 in 4 Americans think Officer Darren Wilson is guilty of the murder of Michael Brown. Almost twice as many think Wilson acted in self-defense on August 9 when he shot Brown during an altercation on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri.

Dean Obeidallah is certain Wilson will get off. Writing at the Daily Beast, Obeidallah, a former lawyer and now political commentator, looked carefully at a Missouri statute that will exonerate Wilson and concluded that he will walk. He wrote:

On Monday afternoon, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon (shown) declared a state of emergency for the entire state to prepare for the anticipated reaction to the expected jury decision to not indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson after Wilson fatally shot Michael Brown. Nixon explained why he issued his executive order:

There is the possibility of expanded unrest; and … The State of Missouri will be prepared to appropriately respond to any reaction of [the grand jury’s] announcements; and… Our citizens and businesses must be protected from violence and damage, Therefore … I do hereby declare a State of Emergency exists in the State in Missouri.

The new Market Basket Store #32 in Chelsea, Massachusetts

The tone of the announcement from Market Basket’s shareholders late Wednesday night was vastly different from the statement issued by the company’s previous CEOs two weeks ago announcing that any of the striking workers who failed to return to work by Friday of that week would be terminated.

The first statement was harsh: “You must return to [your job] ready to fulfill your duties no later than Friday, August 15, 2014. Should you choose to ignore … these directives, the company will consider you to have abandoned your job, thereby ending your employment with the company.”

The latest announcement was warm and reassuring, and comforting to the nearly 25,000 employees and hundreds of thousands of customers of Market Basket who had boycotted the 71-store chain over the last six weeks:
