When the liberal Huffington Post did its research, it was horrified to find not only that the worst political disasters took place during mid-term elections, but that third on the list was the cleansing of anti-gun Democrats in the 1994 midterms. Voters, outraged at their passage of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (aka the Clinton assault weapons ban), removed eight Democrat senators and 56 House Democrats. This resulted in the first time Republicans were in control of the House since Eisenhower.
But, as philosopher George Santayana noted, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Guilty of not knowing or remembering their political history are some 165 House Democrats who have signed on to a bill echoing Clinton’s gun ban: Rep. David Cicilline’s Assault Weapons Ban of 2018. Cicilline’s bill prohibits the “sale, transfer, production, and importation” of semi-automatic rifles and pistols that can hold a detachable magazine, as well as semi-automatic rifles with a magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds” of ammunition. Also to be banned would be semi-automatic shotguns and magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. His bill lists 205 specific firearms that would be prohibited, including the AK-47 and the AR-15.
These anti-gun pols also have forgotten why the Clinton-era gun ban failed to be resurrected in 2004: there was no credible evidence from any source that it had any impact on gun violence. As recently as April 17, 2013, the Senate voted down a measure that would have restored it, 40 to 60.
Nevertheless, ignoring history and its lessons, Cicilline announced his offering last week:
Assault weapons were made for one purpose. They are designed to kill as many people as possible in a short period of time. They do not belong in our communities.
I am proud to introduce the Assault Weapons Ban with the support of leaders in law enforcement. It’s on all of us to end this carnage.
He got some support from another anti-gunner, Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla., representing several counties including Broward where the Valentine’s Day massacre took place) – with a Freedom Index rating of just 17 – as he announced he was supporting Cicilline’s bill:
Americans don’t own tanks or missiles; so why should our streets be flooded with weapons of war made for the sole purpose of killing people?
In his announcement, Cicilline cobbled together phony statistics to claim that “there have been almost 8,300 incidents of gun violence so far in 2018. More than 2,200 Americans have lost their lives. More than 500 children have been killed or injured.” Cicilline provided no source for such outrageous claims and so Alex Hollings, a former Marine, provided it for his readers at SOFREP, a blog dedicated to informing special operations veterans:
It seems likely, however, that his numbers come for organizations like GunViolenceArchive.org … though a quick perusal of their cited instances changes the context of the claim. That figure includes accidents, suicides, and … self-defense.
The political mathematics mitigates against Cicilline’s bill seeing the light of day. Even if every single House Democrat would agree to put his political career on the line and vote for the bill, it would still be 25 votes short of passage. That means that 25 Republicans would also have to put their own political futures on the line and vote for it. Even if they did, it would have to pass the Senate before ever arriving on Trump’s desk.
So why would they do that? Why would anti-gun Democrats line up publicly and support a bill that they know won’t pass, in an election year when voters – especially those who support the Second Amendment – are on hyper-alert for political traitors seeking to infringe further upon their precious rights? Are they so blinded by their ideology that they’re willing to commit political suicide over it?
It would seem so, at least in Cicilline’s case. While serving as mayor of Providence, RI, he helped found Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), which was later folded into the rabidly anti-gun Everytown for Gun Safety. That earned him the endorsement of that group and the wrath of the National Rifle Association (NRA), which has given him a lifetime rating of F-minus. Not surprisingly, Cicilline’s Freedom Index score reflects his unconstitutional stance: Out of 100 opportunities to support the Constitution, he violated his oath of office by voting against it 74 times.
Come November it is fervently hoped that voters have long enough memories to repeat history and oust these anti-freedom pols from office.
