Abraham Lincoln famously said that “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” But Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly has come close.
For decades O’Reilly has fooled millions into thinking that he is a conservative. Contributors to his Wikipedia page say that “O’Reilly is widely considered a conservative commentator,” while the Conservative Book Club giddily endorsed him without reservation.
Nevertheless, once in a while his education at liberal Boston University and Harvard, along with his decades of experience working for CBS News, ABC News, and CBS’s Inside Edition, bleeds over into his “The O’Reilly Factor.” On Wednesday night O’Reilly pontificated on gun violence and its solution: federal police enforcing every state law as a federal crime:
Anyone committing any crime, any crime with a gun, even simple illegal possession, should be subject to federal mandatory prison sentences. All gun crimes should become federal crimes.
That way, American law enforcement everywhere can not only take guns off the streets but people who illegally carry them and/or use them to commit crimes … and the upshot, pardon the pun, is that legal gun owners would be left alone.
But, of course, those gun owners wouldn’t be left alone, as O’Reilly correctly, albeit briefly, stated in January, following the San Bernardino, California shooting that background checks would only apply to law-abiding citizens trying to buy a gun:
The truth is, terrorists are not going to submit themselves to background checks – neither are dangerous felons or insane people. They are not going to sign any paper when they buy a gun.
Do we all get that? They will buy their guns on the black market. And no registration law will prevent that.
However, less than six months later, on June 14, O’Reilly blamed gun violence on the “right wing,” calling them responsible for it and then adding:
There is too much gun crime in the USA, and high powered weaponry is too easy to get. That’s the fact. So let’s deal with it. We all have the right to bear arms, but we don’t have the right to buy and maintain mortars. Even if you feel threatened by gangsters or a New World Order. No bazookas, no Sherman tanks, no hand grenades. That’s because the Second Amendment clearly states the government has a right to regulate militias, made up of individuals. They have that right in the name of public safety.
O’Reilly’s shows are regularly slightly off-center, missing the point and dismissing critical issues like national sovereignty, the real purposes behind the United Nations, the New World Order, and its primary enabler, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He interviews similar weak-kneed types who never seriously question him while he avoids anyone who might actually challenge him in his worldview, such as Alex Jones of InfoWars, Art Thompson of The John Birch Society, Eric Erickson of RedState.com, or Jerome Corsi of World News Daily.
Sometimes he sounds like the NRA, as he did in January about the futility of background checks. Sometimes he sounds like the phony reverend Jesse Jackson, who told reporters the same day O’Reilly called out the “right wing” for its complicity in gun violence:
Gun control cannot end terror, neither the mass shootings like Orlando nor the daily horror as in Chicago. Omar Mateen, the killer in Orlando, was a security guard, apparently with a record clean enough that he was able to buy guns legally. But surely it is inconceivable that military assault weapons like the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle that he used (and that was also used in Aurora and Newtown and San Bernardino) should be so easily purchased. Reviving the ban on assault weapons that lapsed under President Bush is not a full remedy, but it is simple common sense.
Once in a while O’Reilly exposes himself as nothing more than a shill, a faker, a deceiver, a phony, a fraud and a cover for the totalitarian left which controls him and the mainstream media. On Wednesday night he let his “deception” shield slip just enough for perceptive viewers to see who O’Reilly really is.
