For years Pastor Voddie Baucham of Grace Family Baptist Church in Springs, Texas, has been urging his flock, and anyone else who would listen (or read his blog, Exodus Mandate), to take their kids out of the public schools. He writes:
I am no fan of government education … I try to make Biblical, philosophical, and theological arguments in favor of Christian education as often as possible….
Our schools grow progressively (no pun intended) worse. As fall approaches, I want to appeal to those of you with children in government schools: please don’t send them back! I beg you to consider what you are doing.
He then outlines five reasons why:
- You don’t have to send them to the public schools;
- America’s schools are among the worst in the world;
- They are morally repugnant;
- What they are learning is anti-Christian; and
- The Bible commands you to give them a Christ-centered education.
For those who keep their kids in government schools and then later come to him asking for prayers for them as they have gone astray, Baucham famously asks them, “If you give up your kids to Caesar why are you surprised to learn that they have become Romans?”
Towering figures of the faith agree with Baucham. David Alan Black, New Testament professor at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, put it this way:
No academic skepticism, no secularist authors, no blatant materialism can so undermine the spiritual life of the country like the completely secularized training of the child under the authority of the state…
If we think we can keep our children in a secular school system and escape the dumbed-down, amoral, and immoral results of secular humanism inn schools, we are sorely mistaken.
Cornelius Van Til, who spent 43 years of his life teaching Reformed theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, expounded upon the spiritual vacuum that exists in public schools today:
Non-Christian education puts the child in a vacuum … the result is that the child dies.
Christian education alone really nurtures personality because it alone gives the child air and food … modern education philosophy [on the other hand] gruesomely insults our God and our Christ.
How, then, do you expect to build anything positively Christian or theistic upon a foundation which is the negation of Christianity and theism?
The father of Methodism, John Wesley, was equally candid:
Let it be remembered, that I do not speak to the wild, giddy, thoughtless world, but to those who fear God.
I ask, then, for what do you send your children to [public] school? Why? That they may be fit to live in the world?
In which world to you mean – this or the next?
Perhaps you thought of this world only, and had forgot that there is a world to come; yea, and one that will last forever!
Pray take this into your account, and send them to such masters as will keep it always before their eyes. Otherwise, to send them to [a government] school is little better than sending them to the devil….
Why then should anyone reading about the sexting scandal erupting in a small town in Colorado be surprised? Not far from this writer’s home is Canon City, a pleasant, middle-class, semi-rural town of 16,000 perhaps best known for being surrounded, ironically, by nine state and four federal prisons and penitentiaries, including the Supermax Colorado State Penitentiary. A sexting ring that has been operating in Canon City High School and a nearby middle school for at least the past three years has just been exposed (again, no pun intended) that involves an estimated 100 students who have been shunting back and forth among each other some 400 nude photos. The school super was caught by surprise and hoped that it was just a one-off event. The DA isn’t sure what to do as Colorado law makes it illegal for minors to send nude pictures even if they are of themselves. He’s taking the next 30 days to sort things out, but has admitted that, because Colorado’s laws are so onerous, requiring those charged with registering themselves forever as sex offenders, he is unlikely to press charges.
Parents are outraged, even though it’s been going on for years. The football coaches learned that so many on the football team are involved that they cancelled the final game of the season last weekend, as it would, according to their standards, be “inappropriate’ to field a team of sexters as representatives of the high school.
A few parents have come to the same conclusions as have pastors and preachers like Baucham, Black, Van Til, and Wesley, and are taking their kids and schooling them at home. For many, it’s already too late. One parent, too late to discover the degree to which the culture has declined, learned that their only daughter, a precious and precocious child of 14, was propositioned “several times” during her first week of high school as a sophomore.
An increasing number are finding their way to FreedomProject Academy, sponsored and nourished by the John Birch Society. In its first five years enrollment has increased from 22 to nearly 1,000, with exponential growth being planned for the future. When this writer spoke to Allen Scholl, FPA’s administrator, Scholl had this to say about the sexting scandal in Canon City in particular, and the general decline of morality in public education in general: “With the removal of the moral landmarks beginning in the 1960s in this country has come this wave of immorality. The chickens are coming home to roost. We’re just glad to be here to give parents a better alternative.”
