The latest report from the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) merely confirms what most sentient souls living in the US already know: more Americans are becoming aware not only of their Second Amendment rights but of the increasing threat posed against them by the current administration. More people are learning about that “palladium” of their liberties: that without the freedom to own, keep, bear and use firearms, the rest of the Bill of Rights has no foundation. As Joseph Story, associate justice on the Supreme Court from 1811 to 1845, wrote:
The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.
It ain’t about duck huntin’, says the man. Better expressed on the bumper sticker that reads “The Second Amendment: the One that Insures All the Others.” Citizens are buying firearms at such a rate that, according to the ATF, gun makers’ production has increased by 140 percent under the Obama administration in just the first five years of his rule.
There are other reasons, too, of course: the Supreme Court’s rulings in Heller and McDonald have cleared the way for individuals to exercise those individuals’ rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment. The breath-taking expansion of concealed carry across the nation, with Maine being the eighth state to allow “constitutional carry” by its citizens (no permit required to carry concealed). The growing popularity of clay trap-shooting as “cool” by increasing numbers of high schoolers, with the attendant and expected realization by many of them that their right to shoot is under attack and some of them getting involved in the freedom fight.
But nothing has driven the purchase and sale of firearms like the attacks on the Second Amendment by the present administration:
Obama has always been anti-Second Amendment, even as an Illinois state senator;
His frontal assault on it following the Newtown massacre, demanding that Congress ban more than 100 types of “assault” weapons along with national background checks;
His secretary of state signing the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) which, under Articles 2 and 3, would prohibit the right to own, buy, sell, trade or transfer “all means of armed resistance” (a clear indication of just what the totalitarians running the UN fear the most), as well as “ammunition fired … by the conventional arms covered under Article 2”;
His executive order in July 2014 banning the import of all AK-47s;
His attempt to ban all “green tip” rounds through the ATF; and
His current effort to force the Social Security administration to claim that all receiving disability checks also be banned from owning firearms.
But the ATF report is dated, covering only through 2013. It doesn’t measure the proxy of ownership offered by the number of background checks that citizens are forced to complete when purchasing a firearm. In 2011 there were 16 million. In 2012 there were 19.6 million. In 2013 there were 21 million. If the trend just stays the same (unlikely as Obama has promised to finish his second by concentrating on the diminishment of Second Amendment rights), it’s easy to see that background checks as a proxy for new gun ownership portends continued growth in both the manufacture and the sale and purchase of firearms by more and more newly awakened citizens.
This makes Obama the world’s greatest gun salesman. Upon reviewing the ATF report, Erich Pratt, the son of Larry Pratt and founder of Gun Owners of America, said:
The ATF report confirms what we already know: that Barack Obama deserves the “Gun Salesman of the Decade” award.
People have been rushing to buy firearms because they’re afraid that Obama will take away their Second Amendment rights.
David Workman said the same thing, only differently. As senior editor for Gun Mag published by another pro-gun group that is also enjoying massive increases in membership, the Second Amendment Foundation, he wrote:
Barack Obama is the stimulus package for the firearms industry. The greatest irony of the Obama administration is that the one industry that he may not really like to see healthy has become the healthiest industry in the United States.
All of which makes another popular statistic outdated. Current estimates are that more than 100 million households have at least one gun in the home, while the total owned by citizens becoming awake and aware of the rights and the dangers posed to them by Obama is estimated to be 300 million. With Obama’s promised push to finish his second term with victories against the Second Amendment, those numbers are certain to continue to grow.
