The president thinks he can keep something like the Fort Hood shooting that took place on Wednesday afternoon from happening again. As a starting point, he called out his troops to find out what happened:
My security team is … working … to determine exactly what happened….
We want to assure [everyone that] we are going to get to the bottom of what happened…. We don’t yet know what happened, but obviously that sense of security has been broken once again. We need to find out exactly what happened.
The underlying assumption is the same one he made back in 2009 when Major Hasan murdered 13 soldiers at Fort Hood: that he could actually keep it from happening again:
[I am asking] every agency involved … to investigate why this happened, how this happened, and to ensure that they can tell [me] that it won’t happen again.
But it did. What went wrong?
Specialist 4th Class Ivan Lopez apparently got into an argument with another soldier, pulled out his .45, and shot him. Then, while he was at it, he shot at several others, killing some and wounding others.
He hopped into his car and headed off to another building. Along the way he continued firing at soldiers, wounding some of them. When he exited his car, he was confronted by an MP and then, like most criminal shooters when confronted with deadly force, Lopez killed himself.
This was similar in many respects to the first Fort Hood shooting back in 2009 when Major Hasan entered a building where soldiers were completing their final medical checks before being shipped off to Afghanistan. Hasan shouted “Allahu Akbar!” (Arabic for “God is great”) and started shooting. The rampage ended when he was shot in the back by a local police officer. After four years Hasan finally had his day in court last summer when he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
Both attackers had recently bought the firearms they used in their attacks, passing a criminal background check first. Hasan planned his attack carefully while Lopez’ plans might have been less definite (although he did carry his new Smith and Wesson handgun onto the post illegally). Both attackers’ shooting sprees ended when confronted with deadly force, with one of them saving taxpayers endless amounts of money by removing himself from the scene immediately.
Both attackers had left clues that were only discovered after the fact. Hasan had had numerous contacts with Muslim terrorists, while Lopez had been treated as recently as a week earlier for depression and anxiety.
The Holy Scriptures explain what Obama and his “troops” haven’t figured out: “The heart of man is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: Who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) Instead, he thinks government can protect the innocent by making new rules. At Fort Hood, those new rules included “sheltering in place,” locking doors and staying away from windows. In other words, man, although not perfect, can be protected from other men through government edict.
But evil exists in the heart of man and rules that disarm targets merely turn them into victims in the face of that evil. In 1993, then-President Bill Clinton signed into law a bill eliminating precisely the one thing that would have ended those shootings much more quickly: no guns on military installations. Specifically, the policy banned all manner of carry except for “DA [Department of the Army] personnel regularly engaged in law enforcement or security duties.”
In their massive study of multiple victim public shootings, professors John Lott and William Landes examined data from 1977 through 1995 and concluded:
Our results find the only policy factor to have a consistently significant influence on multiple victim public shootings is the passage of concealed handgun laws….
These laws reduce the number of shootings and have an even greater effect on their severity.
Evil exists in this sinful and declining world. In God’s eyes, human life is of inestimable value. That’s why the Founders made it so difficult for sinful man to exert his inherently evil intentions on civilians under Article I, Section 8, and then sealing the deal with the Second Amendment. With life comes the right to defend life. But politicians like Obama think government can somehow protect innocents from predators. By disarming them, all he does is turn them into victims.
When Lisa Pfund, one of those unarmed targets who became a victim in 2009, heard about the attack on Wednesday:
I went on Facebook and I thought, “Not again. It shouldn’t have happened again. I thought things were put in place where it wouldn’t happen again.”
Until common sense is restored, massacres like this will continue to happen and continue to surprise those who have repeatedly promised that it won’t happen again. But common sense will return only when the true nature of man is understood and the Constitution is appreciated for recognizing it.
