Here’s another trial balloon, this time from Vice President Joe Biden who, according to the Washington Times, “floated the possibility that President Obama will take unilateral action to impose in the wake of last month’s Connecticut school shooting.” Biden said Obama would do a “work-around” Congress if Congress fails to act:

The president is going to act. There are  executive orders, executive action that can be taken. We haven’t decided what  that is yet. But we’re compiling it all with the help [of] the attorney general  and all the rest of the Cabinet members as well as legislative action we believe  is required.

There’s the tip-off of a dictatorship: “legislative action we believe is required.”

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) called it for what it is:

The Founding Fathers never envisioned executive orders being used to restrict  our constitutional rights. We live in a republic, not a dictatorship. The president should not be able to act unilaterally when it comes  to our constitutional rights. Executive orders were meant as a way for the  president to implement legislatively passed laws, not to make law.

Obama is doing his best to cover his tracks and make it appear that his “executive diktat” will be the result of consulting with “competing parties with competing interests” on the matter before issuing his order. He is meeting on Thursday with, among others, representatives from the and Walmart. By the way, Walmart, according to the Times, is the “largest seller of munitions in the country.”

Some politicians are willing to listen to what comes out of Thursday’s meeting before making up their minds. Here’s how one of those who should know better expressed it. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said:

I’m a little concerned they’re going to try and rush this thing through and pass some piece of out of Washington, D.C., within a month. Let’s sit back and  listen to what comes out of these White House meetings. I mean, I’ve got a flexible mind. I’m willing to give the vice president and the president the benefit of the doubt.

Why would Johnson say that? He’s supposedly a Tea Party “favorite,” isn’t he? But he now appears to have a “flexible mind” whatever that’s supposed to mean. And he’s willing to give The One the “benefit of the doubt?”

There’s no doubt, at least in my mind, about what exactly is afoot here: abrogation of the Constitution with the support (or not) of the NRA, Walmart and waffles like Johnson.
