An average soul perusing the headlines from yesterday would most likely miss Obama’s use of words to indicate where he wants to take us. Listen to what he said about the negotiations over the fiscal cliff:
Everybody’s got to give a little bit in a sensible way. We move forward together, or we don’t move forward at all.
Uh huh. We have to “move forward.” What’s that all about?
Let’s let Glenn Beck provide a little insight here:
Many communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name forward. The word ‘forward’ carries a special meaning in the socialist political terminology. It had been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications. The slogan forward reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals – that their movements reflected the march of history which would move forward past capitalism into socialism and communism. (my emphasis)
Victor Morton, writing at the Washington Times, goes into a little more detail:
There have been at least two radical-left publications named “Vorwaerts” (the German word for “Forward”). One was the daily newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Germany whose writers included Friedrich Engels and Leon Trotsky…
Another was the 1844 biweekly reader of the Communist League. Karl Marx, Engels and Mikhail Bakunin are among the names associated with that publication…
According to Obama, the way “forward” is through the recalcitrant Congress:
Call me a hopeless optimist, but I actually still think we can get it done. The challenge we’ve got right now is that the American people are a lot more sensible, and a lot more thoughtful, and much more willing to compromise, and give, and sacrifice, and act responsibly, than their elected representatives are.
That’s a problem.
Au contraire, Mr. President. I take heart that what you call a “problem” is instead a stiffening of the backbone of those elected members of Congress who are sticking by their word – by signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge – which helped get them elected in the first place.
Would that our “forward” president be faced with many more such problems.
